Maheshwar is a town located on the banks of the Narmada river in the Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh. The town is famous for having beautiful ancient temples and the Maheshwari saree. In ancient times the town was the home place of queen Ahilya Bai Holkar, who lived in her fort, but later the fort is converted into a hotel, which is now famous as Hotel Ahilya Fort.

The Holkar Fort, which is also known as the queen’s fort or Ahilya fort, is situated in Maheshwar town and was built by the Holkar Dynasty. The fort is the residence of Queen Ahilya Bai Holkar. She ruled for almost 31 years from 1765 – to – 1796, and built offices, a darbaar, and an audience hall for her.
But later in 2000, Prince Shivaji Rao Holkar, the son of the last King of Indore, converted the fort into the Heritage hotel, which is famous by the name Hotel Ahilya Fort Heritage.
